How To Slice Text in Cricut Design Space? [A Complete Guide]

Do you want to learn how to Slice text in Cricut Design Space? You have come to the right place. The Cricut Slice tool splits two overlapping texts or pictures into different parts. The Cricut Slice tool creates new cut paths from the two pictures, resulting in three or more entirely new sizes and shapes. Each new size and shape will appear as an individual layer in the Layers panel.

Slice tool has many uses, and you can do amazing projects. It can also be a bit frustrating because the Slice tool has rules you must follow before it works properly.

This blog will cover everything related to Slicing text in Design Space and show you some best things you can do. Let’s take a look at Cricut software’s slice text concepts in a little more detail.

Cricut Guide: Slicing Text in Design Space

Follow the steps provided below in order to Slice text in Cricut Design Space. In this project, we will create a gift card tag. We will start with a long rectangle shape, a small circle, and the word “Congrats.”

  1. First, go to Canvas and click on create a new project. Then, add shapes and a text box to the Canvas (as shown in the picture below.)

  1. Next, we will start by using the small circle to poke holes in the rectangular shape so we have a place to tie the ribbon. Drag the circle over the rectangle. After that, select both layers, and tap on Align Center Vertically to line them up. Then, with both layers still selected, tap on Slice. You will notice the Slice Result on the right side of the screen in the Layers panel.
  1. Now, we will repeat the procedure with the word “Congrats.” Drag the text over the rectangle. Then, select both layers, and tap on Align > Center Vertically. Then, with both layers selected, tap on Slice. Now, you can see the Slice Result on the right side of your screen in the Layers panel.

Note: You can slice only two layers at a time. So, you have to make this gift tag in 2 steps: first, slice the circle, and second, slice the word.

Let’s look at the project results.

  • First, you will notice we still have the original circle shape and the original text layer. (Layers are in black color.)
  • Second, you will notice the basic rectangle shape with the hole in the circle and the word “punched out” on it. (Layer is in green color.)
  • And third, you will notice the “punch-out” itself. These layers were sliced from the rectangle shape. (Layers are also in green color.)

More pieces are available on the Canvas than you expect, but that’s alright. You will notice that the result is like using a physical hole punch on a cardstock piece. All you have is the punch, the cardstock size, and the smaller circle punched out of your gift card.

If you don’t want the extra circles and words, you can remove them from the Canvas.

Note about text: Take a look at the text layers in this project. When we added the word “Congrats” to the Canvas, it was an editable Text. But when we used Slice, Cricut Design Space changed the “Congrats” layer to the Slice Result – meaning it’s a picture, not an editable text.
