Different Types of Felt: Which Felt Is Best To Cut with Cricut Maker?

Various felts are available in the market, ranging from inexpensive/low quality to more expensive/premium quality. They can be divided into 3 categories: Acrylic felt, Wool blend, and 100% wool.

Acrylic Felt

Acrylic felt is the most affordable felt available and can be found at any craft store. Acrylic felt is less dense and prone to scratches than other felts. When you hold it up to the light, you can notice that there are thin spots.

In general, this felt ok for basic projects that wouldn’t be handled much. It will start to swell if it’s touched and messed around.

Craft Felt

Craft felt is usually under a dollar for a 9 “x12” sheet.

Premium Craft Felt

The premium craft feel is a step up from the basic craft felt. In premium large 12″x18″ sheets, not 12″x9″. Also, there are quite a few colors to pick from.

It’s made from Ecofi polyester (made from 100% recycled plastic bottles). As you can see in the photo, premium craft felt is thicker than regular craft felt.

Stiffened Felt

Stiffened felt has an additive that makes it feel a bit stiff rather than soft and flexible. It will hold its shape well, and the edges don’t stretch or fray.

If your project works with a stiffer felt, it’s much easier to cut, especially for Cricut Explore users who don’t have the benefit of a rotary blade.

Cricut Felt

Cricut has created its own brand of felt. It has a pack of 10 of 12 “x12” sheets. It’s created to cut without needing a deep-cut blade, is of medium weight and is 1 mm thicker. Also, it feels a bit stiff.

Wool Blend Felt

The wool blend felt is stronger and more durable than non-wool felt.

100% Wool Felt

You can get the highest quality (and most costly) of felt is 100% wool.

Cutting Felt with Cricut Maker

This cut felt like a dream if you are lucky enough to have a Cricut Maker! How to cut felt with Cricut Maker? It is easy! For either experience, simply add it to your mat and tap “Edit tools” when your machine prompts you to choose a blade. Choose a rotary blade instead of whatever blade is indicating the cutting. Then cut it! We’ve had the best luck with rotary blades when cutting projects, and we’ve done many of them.

We recommend using a pink fabric mat with felt and Cricut Maker. Keep in mind that you will ruin the mat more quickly because the felt fibers will shed excessively.
